Despite "freezing fog" that didn't lift until nearly noon I had a great day
with some good spring birds.  My first Eastern Meadowlark was seen in the early
morning fog just south of Wallaceberg.  A few hours later I had my first
Eastern Phoebe on the north end of Walpole Island, followed by Wilson's Snipe
and an Eastern Towhee.  A short while later I had at least 5 Tufted Titmice in
an oak savannah at the south end of the island.  Over the agricultural fields
adjacent to the marshes on the south end of the island I enjoyed watching a
female Northern Harrier drive off a light morph Rough-legged Hawk.  Near the
west side of the island there was an adult Bald Eagle soaring high.  As the day
wore on and I had to get back to the Mitchell's Bay area, where I picked up
several Wood Ducks (again my first of the year), along with a couple of Tree
Swallows and a single Purple Martin.

There are still approximately 60 Tundra Swans around Mitchell's Bay
