Greetings Birders,

I spent half a day birding and photographing in Col. Sam Smith Park. The
highlight was the large number of Red-necked Grebes; 50 were in the harbour
along with one pair of Horned Grebes. Constant courtship behaviour was observed
amongst many of the grebes.  Also in the harbour were Lesser Scaup, Long-tailed
Duck, Bufflehead, Mallard, Canada Goose, and Mute Swan.

Large rafts of Red-necked Grebes were also present in large numbers offshore,
along with more Long-tailed Ducks, Bufflehead and Gadwall.  In the afternoon,
the wind kicked up out of the west to gusts of 54 km/h, making observation--and
photography--difficult.

Land birds included Tree Swallow, Eastern Phoebe, Northern Mockingbird, Song
Sparrow, American Goldfinch, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Red-winged Blackbird,
American Robin. I didn't see any evidence of the Cooper's Hawk pair yet.  I was
very disappointed to see that someone has vandalized some of the Tree Swallow
houses, smashing them to pieces.
