Hello ONTbirders, The woods were full of birdsong this morning on the walk to the lakeshore. Species seen and heard there and in the fields included: Dark-eyed JuncoGolden-crowned Kinglet Am. Goldfinch Hermit Thrush Eastern Phoebe Tree Swallow Field SparrowSong Sparrow Northern FlickerNorthern MockingbirdAm. KestrelBrown-headed CowbirdNorthern CardinalRed-winged BlackbirdAm. Crow There were very few birds in the inner harbour, aside from the usual suspects. But in the bays, once again there were rafts of Red-necked Grebes (150+), as well as the following: Horned Grebe (3) Pied-billed Grebe (1) Red-breasted Merganser (10+) Long-tailed Duck Bufflehead Lesser Scaup Gadwall Mallard Mute Swan DC Cormorant Canada Goose
The Red-breasted Grebes actively continue with their courting behaviour, and the antics of the Bufflehead while courting is always amusing. It's heartening to see that some kind soul has already replaced the Tree Swallow boxes that had been vandalized, and one of them is already occupied. Photos from the day can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/naturegirl99/ . Col. Sam Smith Park is located at the foot of Kipling Avenue in Toronto, south of Lakeshore Blvd. It's also accessible by TTC via the Kipling 44 South route.
