Being new to the area, last Wednesday (April 14) was the first visit for my wife and me to the Samuel Wilmot Nature Area, beside Wilmot Creek.

Beyond the usual suspects, the highlight was a Harris's Sparrow, nearly in breeding plumage. It had some black around the face contrasting with the very pink bill. Very much like the second picture at <http://www.richditch.com/page111/page121/page121.html>. The bird flew from trees on the west side of the creek, off to the west over a grassy, weedy meadow. Also in the area, Savannah Sparrow, lots of Tree Swallows choosing boxes, and a solitary Hermit Thrush near where the creek enters L. Ontario.

The west side of Samuel Wilmot Nature Area is accessible at the south end of Cobbledick Road. Take exit 440 off Hwy 401 and go north on Mill Street. Turn left (west) at King street in Newcastle and go west to Cobbledick Road. Turn left and go south on Coobledick until it ends. Off to the left is the parking lot for the nature area. Walk in about 1/2 mile.
