Point Pelee National Park Migration Update for Sunday May 2, 2010

Another round of thundershowers rolled through the Park early this morning
(5:30 a.m.)  raising hopes of a grounding of migrants. Unfortunately that
didn’t materialize but a number of interesting birds have been reported
keeping excitement and expectations high. The Worm-eating Warbler spotted
at the Dunes yesterday afternoon was re-found this morning. While people
were observing it a Prairie Warbler sang once and was soon tracked down and
seen by many.

Another Worm-eating Warbler was also discovered in Tilden’s Woods on the
Park’s guided walk. Around the corner from that bird a brilliant male
Hooded Warbler sang and showed itself to many others. Also present in
Tilden’s Woods were numerous Northern Waterthrushes, female Scarlet
Tanager, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Blue-winged Warbler, Red-bellied Woodpecker,
a pair of Wood Ducks, and a sprinkling of other warbler species.

Other birds reported from within the Park included a lone Willet at the Tip
first thing this morning as well as a Lesser Black-backed Gull. A little
ways up the west beach a Red-throated Loon was spotted (also early). A
Marsh Wren was spotted at the Visitor Centre and another at the Tip.
A GOSHAWK was observed flying across the road near DeLaurier Homestead.

A Louisiana Waterthrush and Yellow-billed Cuckoo were in the Woodland
Nature Trail.

A Solitary Sandpiper was intermingling with Northern Waterthrushes and
Red-winged Blackbirds at the wet spot along Shuster Trail.

Finally, two Blue-winged Warblers were at Blue Heron.

Good Birding,
Hike Leaders Pete, Karl, Todd, Justin, Marianne, John and Jeremy
