* * *Point Pelee National Park Migration Update for May 9, 2010: * A bright but cool day greeted birders in the Park this morning. Winds were a bit brisk from the north, but viewing conditions were great. The first bird observed by many was a LAUGHING GULL at the Tip that was then seen most of the morning further north on the East Beach approximately adjacent to the Sparrow Field. A RUDDY TURNSTONE was reported from the same area. At least 16 Warbler species were observed in the Park this morning with highlights being: two singing HOODED WARBLERS located approximately 100 metres north of the tram stop on the main road to the Tip; a male CANADA WARBLER singing on the south side of the Shuster Trail just west of the turnoff onto the Tilden Trail; and a singing BLUE-WINGED WARBLER reported from the Tip just south of the tram stop. Other warbler species included: CAPE MAY, BLACKBURNIAN, AMERICAN REDSTART, BLACK-THROATED GREEN AND BLUE and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on the Tilden and Woodland Trails. Four species of Vireo were also seen on the Tilden Trail and Woodland Trail collectively, with many WARBLING, several PHILADELPHIA, BLUE-HEADED and RED-EYED. A PURPLE FINCH was also a highlight on the Tilden Trail while a fly over of two SANDHILL CRANES was a highlight on the Woodland Trail. A third year BALD EAGLE was seen soaring over the park at various locations. * * Outside the Park two AMERICAN AVOCETS were reported this morning from the Shorebird Impoundment at the Hillman Marsh Conservation area. The two WHITE-FACED IBIS reported from Big Creek were reported again this morning.
