The adult Little Blue Heron continues to be seen intermittently at Cranberry
Marsh in Whitby. It was seen at 10.30am by Andrew Keaveney and at 1.25pm by
myself. The glacial gales of this morning have mellowed a bit but it is
still very cold and windy at the marsh and the heron is sheltering in the
shallow channels of water west of the central alder scrub. There is no easy
way to get a good view of it but it does fly up out of the marsh
occasionally and the best place to be is still probably the south viewing
platform. However, when I saw it I was at the north platform, trying to see
if I could get a line of sight to where it was last seen, which I couldn't,
but suddenly it flew up from among the cattails and shone indigo against the
alders in a rare ray of sunshine before droppping back into the marsh.
So patience and luck are necessary, but as the wind moderates it may come
out into the open again.

Directions:
Take Brock Street, Exit 410 from Hwy 401 in Whitby, and go south to Victoria
Street. Turn right on Victoria Street, go west to Halls Road, then south to
the viewing platform nearest the lake.
>From Toronto you could exit at Salem Road, Exit 404, go south to Bayly
Street which becomes Victoria Street in Whitby, and drive east to Halls
Road.
