Hey Birders,
WHAT a day!!! I guess to start off, the Pewee. As Mike had mentioned I heard
the bird around 10:30am. I was leading a bird tour at the time when I first
heard it. I knew immediately that I had never heard the bird before, but the
people I was leading had wanted to head back due to the rain. I marked the spot
where I had heard the bird and went back as soon as possible. Graeme Gibson and
I looked along the west beach of Fish Point where I had the bird originally,
from 11:45-3pm. We had two different sightings of silent Pewee's and I was able
to get pictures of both of them, but can't download the pics until I have the
proper cables (should be this thurs/fri). I went back to the same spot around
4:30pm and heard (it called twice) and SAW the bird calling (around 5:30pm for
2? minutes) near where I had originally heard it earlier. I lost track of the
bird after viewing it. I was able to get Graeme and after an hour or so we
heard the bird and briefly saw it fly away at about 6:45pm. We looked for
another hour with no luck. If it is still around tomorrow I will (or have
someone else) post around 9am.
The location of the Pewee is along the West Beach at Fish Point. If you park in
the parking lot and walk directly to the west beach, follow the beach about
300m south. I've marked in the sand a circle with several sticks in it,
although the bird wandered a few hundred metres.
Other birds seen (I only birded Fish Point today); 1 Connecticut Warbler
singing along the west beach half way from the tip to the parking lot. The
young male Summer Tanager is also still around the tip. The male Prothonotary
Warbler is also still hanging around as well as the Yellow-throated Vireo. Two
Cerulean Warblers were reported from Sheridan's Point.
Good Birding!!!
