On Saturday, June 19th, 2010, this is the HNC Birding Report: Green-winged Teal Ring-necked Duck Greater Scaup Lesser Scaup Ruddy Duck Red-necked Grebe Great Egret Least Bittern Green Heron Bald Eagle Broad Winged Hawk Spotted Sandpiper Semipalmated Sandpiper White-rumped Sandpiper Yellow-billed Cuckoo Black-billed Cuckoo Common Raven Sedge Wren Veery Wood Thrush Blue-winged Warbler Golden-winged Warbler Black-throated Blue Warbler Blackburnian Warbler Northern Waterthrush Canada Warbler Scarlet Tanager Indigo Bunting
A short list of birds for the week as breeding season is in full swing and many of the birds are quiet as they remain on nest or are feeding young. Some interesting birds of note this week nonetheless. Up in Flamborough in the Beverly Swamp, a male Golden-winged Warbler was seen carrying food just north of Concession 8 under the transmission lines west of Westover Road. A search of the area today did not turn up this bird but Blue-winged Warblers seemed plentiful. Other birds reported here include both Yellow-billed and Black-billed Cuckoo and Indigo Bunting. In other areas of the swamp around 8th Concession and Westover Road, Broad-winged Hawk, Northern Waterthrush and Canada Warbler were seen. An adult Bald Eagle was seen between 5th and 6th Concession on Friday. Out in the Dundas Marsh, Least Bitterns could be heard calling, Green Heron, Spotted, Semipalmated and White-rumped Sandpiper were also present this week. An interesting place to visit this time of year is North Halton. There are several tracts of land up there all with extensive trails that join up but you can get lost so be wary! A Sedge Wren was a nice surprise in the Robertson Tract. This bird was present and singing heartily today. Access is off Fourth Line Nassagaweya, approximately 400 m north of Sideroad 10. >From the trailhead, walk in about 100-150 m. A smaller side trail takes to the edge of the wetland to the north. Other birds seen/heard in here include Veery, Wood Thrush, Blackburnian Warbler and Scarlet Tanager. Nearby in the Curry Tract accessed directly off of Guelph Line across from the Mowhawk Raceway, a Black-throated Blue Warbler was heard north of the hydro transmission lines in this large tract. At the Windermere Basin this week, summering ducks include Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked Duck, Greater and Lesser Scaup and Ruddy Duck. At the Red Hill Stormwater Pond a single Semipalmated Sandpiper was present earlier in the week. Next week will be the start of returning shorebirds or non-breeders, something to look for in those wet fields and stormwater ponds around the Hamilton Study Area. In the odds and sods, of interest Common Ravens were reported near Britannia Rd. and Tremaine Rd., on the west side of Milton. Down at Bronte Harbour, a pair of Red-necked Grebes are nesting in Bronte Creek and up to two Great Egrets have been seen in the marsh throughout the week. That's the news this week. Please report your sightings. Have a great week.
