I thought I would update those interested on the status of the lagoons at
Tilbury and Blenheim and the birds present today.
Tilbury has fairly low water levels and some excellent shorebird habitat,
especially at the west end. The "lagoon" just north of the main pond is very
dry, but there still remains some water for now and there were some shorebirds
in there as well. Birds present include:
40+ Least Sandpiper
37 Short-billed Dowitcher
30+ Killdeer
16 Lesser Yellowlegs
9 Spotted Sandpiper
3 Greater Yellowlegs
3 Solitary Sandpiper
1 Semipalmated Sandpiper (basic plumaged presumably first year bird that has
been present since late June)
1 Pectoral Sandpiper
Also present were Blue-winged Teal, Gadwall, Great Egrets, Black-crowned Night
Herons, Forster's Terns, etc
At Blenheim Sewage Lagoons:
Lagoon #1 has been drawn down and was full of shorebirds. Lagoon #5 also has
very low water levels with many shorebirds present. The NE corner of Lagoon #4
is decent as well. Shorebirds present include:
205 Least Sandpiper
178 Lesser Yellowlegs
55 Short-billed Dowitcher
10 Spotted Sandpiper
5 Solitary Sandpiper
4 Greater Yellowlegs
many Killdeer
Also present were Ruddy Duck, American Wigeon, Green Heron, Wood Duck, and
Pied-billed Grebe.
Good birding,
Josh Vandermeulen
