Good evening Ontbirders!
All is well I hope!!!
Today I saw and heard a MERLIN calling from the very top of a spruce tree in
east London. This was near the corners of Dundas Street East and Edmonton
Street. The bird was calling constantly, and was quite noisy. Could this be a
post breeding wanderer? An early southerly migrant? Who knows!!! Either way,
this falcon is considered rare in London at this time of year, so it good to
see.
Also, a while back I remember a request from someone inquiring about BARN
SWALLOW roosts.
There is a small colony of Barn Swallows that nest under the Dundas Street
Bridge, at Pottersburg Creek, near First Street. It is a small group, at under
20 birds, but they return here every year like clockwork. I suspect the group
is small because it is a tiny creek, and this is one of the busiest streets in
London. That said, the swallows seem to tolerate traffic and noise.
Stay cool in this nasty humidity!!!
Len Manning
