Shorebirding conditions are still excellent in Lagoon 1 at Blenheim and the
small shorebird pond at Tilbury. It is only a matter of time before something
excellent drops in.
At Blenheim today the highlights included:
-1 hendersoni Short-billed Dowitcher (worn alt. plumage)
-2 Stilt Sandpipers (molting)
-at least 5 juvenile Lesser Yellowlegs
-the first juvenile Least Sandpipers
In total there were 12 species of shorebird present at Blenheim.
Much of the habitat at Tilbury is no longer present as the water levels in the
main lagoon have risen substantially over the past few weeks. However, there
were a small handful of shorebirds in the smaller pond to the north of the
gravel road/path.
-5 adult hendersoni Short-billed Dowitchers (worn alt. plumage)
-1 adult Stilt Sandpiper (molting)
-1 juvenile Least Sandpiper
-1 adult Baird's Sandpiper (molting)
-5 adult Semipalmated Sandpiper (molting)
-2 adult Semipalmated Plover (alt. plumage)
In total there were 10 species of shorebird present at Tilbury. Also present
was the Trumpeter Swan which has been hanging around for the past 2 weeks as
well as good numbers of Great Egrets (they took off in the early evening to
roost somewhere to the north - perhaps St. Clair NWA?).
Good birding,
Josh Vandermeulen
