I had the opportunity to search for the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher at the
Monticello Cell of Luther Marsh today. I did not see it from either of the
roadside locations at which it has been seen. However, I took the lead from
Rob Dobos' post yesterday to walk down the lane toward the viewing blind
that overlooks the Monticello pond/marsh. The blind is roughly 300 m south
of the corner of East Luther Sideroad 21-22 and Dufferin County Rd. 15
(south of the Hamlet of Monticello). There, from the berm adjacent to the
blind, looking north toward Monticello, I observed the Scissor-tailed
Flycatcher in a depression that would not have been visible from either
road, flycatching and perching on a sign post, for about 8 minutes, from
12:40 - 12:48. It then disappeared. On my return to the laneway, I
observed the bird again, this time about 100 m west of the commemorative
plaque on the berm between the blind and the laneway, flycatching and
perching on limbs of shrubs. This observation occurred between about
13:15 - 13:35. It then flew closer to the marsh and I lost it from view.
It was extremely windy at the site today, which may explain why it was in
more sheltered sites out of view of the roads.

Directions:
From Orangeville, take Dufferin County Rd. 109 west to County Rd. 25, turn
right/north through Grand Valley and continue north to County Rd. 15, turn
left and go
through the hamlet of Colbeck to the next hamlet (Monticello; about 5 km
west of County Rd. 25). The wooden blind and laneway are about 300 m south
of the intersection of County Rd. 15 and East Luther Sideroad 21/22, on the
west side of this sideroad. The blind is clearly visible from the road, and
the laneway is just south of this. A day use permit is required if you
choose to use the laneway and walk out to the blind (obtainable at the
Luther Marsh Conservation Area entrance, 1 km or less south of this
laneway).
