Weather: Cooler, cloudy in the morning, getting sunnier and hotter by early afternoon. Wind stayed light SW to S through the day. Count ended at 1:30 pm due to approaching thunderstorms from the west. Raptor Observations: A few birds moving including 3 Kestrels in the morning along with a small movement of Harriers. Also 1 juv. Red-tail and 1 Osprey. At least 5 local Bald Eagles (2 ad., 3 juv.) were cruising back and forth along the shoreline and fishing the marsh. Also noted was an apparent family of Cooper's Hawks interacting NE of the tower that included 3 juvs. and 1 ad. Non-raptor Observations: Smaller movement of Purple Martins today totaling 323. Warbler diversity was good in the morning around the tower with 9 sp. noted (N. Parula, Magnolia, Blackburnian, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Redstart, Yellowthroat, Wilson's, and Canada). Other songbirds included Philadelphia Vireo and Least Flycatcher. The non-raptor highlight was late in the morning when a non-breeding (basic) plumaged Wilson's Phalarope flew by with 2 Lesser Yellowlegs. All 3 birds tried landing in the marsh before seeing the water levels were too high (at least for the Yellowlegs) and continued on to the west. Also observed over the marsh were single Forster's Tern and Bonaparte's Gull. Predictions: Rain in the morning turning to partly cloudy in the afternoon with a 40% chance of rain. Wind strong out of the WSW 15-20 km/h. High 24C. Not ideal, but still a chance a few raptors might be moving. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
