Hello, This morning there were 2 Eared Grebes in the North East cell at Townsend Sewage Lagoons. I first found them in the far north west corner of this cell, but they moved around quite a bit, always staying close together.
Also, when I first arrived, while scanning the mud in the south east cell, I heard and then saw a Whimbrel fly over. I'm not sure where it came from, and I hoped the bird would land, but instead if flew off to the south-east, for miles from what I could tell (I checked later but it didn't stop at Jarvis SL, neither did anything else for that matter). Other highlights at Townsend included at least half a dozen White-Rumped Sandpipers, at least 1, maybe 2 Stilt Sandpipers, a couple of Bairds, an imm. Bald Eagle, 2 Osprey, 1 Coopers Hawk, and a handful of duck species. On my way home to Hamilton I also found 6 Buff-breasted Sandpipers on a sod field south of Airport Road, just west of Miles Road. They were only seen after being flushed by a distant raptor, and after they landed, they quickly disappeared behind a hill in one of the lower lying areas of the field. Had I not seen them flush I wouldn't have found them. Cheers, Jacob Directions: For Townsend Lagoons, from Hamilton, take Hwy 6 south, turn right from Highway 6 to # 69 to Townsend. Turn left on Keith Richardson Parkway. Go to Concession 14, turn right and go about 750 m. Lagoons are on your right. For Buff-breasted SP, from Hamilton, take Hwy 6 south, turn left on Airport Road, scan the sod fields south of this road. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
