Ontbirds subscribers,
During several hours of lake watching off my front yard in Whitby, I observed a
juvenile Sabine's Gull flying east to west about 600-700 metres off shore at
12:20. I also saw a Long-tailed Duck and, in total, a flight of 41 Common
Loons (most flying west to east). I also saw a single Great Black-backed Gull,
a species which appears to be becoming scarcer here every year.
The Sabine's Gull flew west until I lost it when it dropped below the
horizon/water's edge off Thickson's Point. Conditions were quite calm when the
Sabine's Gull appeared, but in the afternoon a slight onshore breeze picked up,
but mostly only first year Herring Gulls appeared to drift in from the lake's
horizon.
To reach Thickson's Point, exit Hwy 401 at exit 412 and follow Thickson Rd. S.
down to the lake. At, the cul-de-sac at the bottom of the road, the Waterfront
Trail will take you west along the lake to the tip of Thickson's Point
