John and Christine Craft and Frank and Sandy Dolby also stopped by today along with about 8 other visitors. Weather: Starting off overcast and cool in the morning with light NE winds that picked up and switched to SE in the afternoon. Raptor Observations: The hoped for Broad-wing flight did not materialize today with the majority of BWs being seen in 2-3 small kettles in the morning. Bob Pettit reported that the main flight line in the afternoon was a few kilometers to the N of the site with the birds visible on weather radar. Otherwise the first noticeable movement of Turkey Vultures and a fair number of migrant Bald Eagles. The juv. Peregrine came low directly over the tower in the morning and was "packing a lunch" as it headed west. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jays were moving heavily in the morning with the majority of the 9,720 observed before 11 am. Also 2 Cape May Warblers, Northern Parula, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and first of season Eastern Phoebe and Golden-crowned Kinglets. Predictions: Partly cloudy with south winds becoming southwest 30 km/hr late in the morning. High of 29C. Not ideal, but Sharp-shins and Kestrels should still be moving in the off winds. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ Directions to site: Entering Canada from Detroit at the Ambassador Bridge: After Canadian Customs, stay left 50 yards, passing over the railroad tracks.
