Weather: Light winds out of the west, moderate temperatures, and good visibility made for a good day of hawk counting. Winds picked up in the afternoon with a slight shift to north. Raptor Observations: A well needed good day of hawk watching. A few kettles of Broad-winged Hawks are still moving through with 2,153 counted. Turkey Vultures are beginning to show signs of migration with 251 on the move today. Most impressive today was 2 separate Swainson's Hawks where found. The first was a juvenile light morph at around 12pm, the second was an adult dark morph around 2pm. A total of 2,906 species where counted of 12 species. Non-raptor Observations: Migration wasn't all about the raptors today. All day long a kettle of Northern Rough-winged Swallows that numbered in the thousands spent their time around the count site. A Cape May Warbler was seen again in it's usual Spruce tree, and a Golden-crowned Kinglet observed nearby. Rarities for the day include a Franklin's Gull observed over Lake Erie, and the reappearance of the White-winged Dove. The dove was seen at 8:11am as it flew west to east over the count site and toward "The Ugly House". Predictions: Winds should follow same pattern as yesterday, light rain may be a problem. If the winds shift to the north as the local news station predicts, we will send someone down to Pt. Mouillee. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Greg Norwood ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
