Weather: Mostly clear with NW winds 8-12 km/hr picking up in the afternoon. Temps. ranging from 10 to 21C. Raptor Observations: The season's first decent flight of Turkey Vultures. A fair number of Sharp-shins were moving with adults now picking up in number. Also several Harriers, Red-tails, and Broad-wings mixed in amongst the Vultures. The day's highlight was watching a juv. Peregrine blast through a few Blue Jay flocks before finally knocking a Jay down into the marsh and then picking it off just above the water's surface. The same bird (it had a mis-placed primary poking up on the left wing) came flying back through about 45 mins. later with a half-full crop and still chasing Blue Jays around the marsh. Non-raptor Observations: Total Blue Jay count was 9,015 with many moving late in the day. Also a few small groups of Pine Siskins totaling 15, 9 Am. Pipits, Indigo Bunting, and 2 C. Nighthawks. Predictions: Cold, wet, and windy. Rain showers with NE winds 30 km/hr in the afternoon. High of 13C. Winds are good but unless the rain clears, very little expected in the way of migrant raptors. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
