Weather: A nice clear day with good visibility. Temperatures stayed cool throughout the day, but we did not see as much from the oncoming cold front as predicted. Which worked in terms of raptor numbers. Raptor Observations: A fantastic day to say the least. Nonstop hawk counting all day long with 6,391 individuals counted of 12 species. Most impressive was the wall of Turkey Vultures that lasted nearly all day long, 6,089 counted. Which is a new record for the 1st of October, the previous record was 3,236. Broad-winged Hawks streamed by all day long in small numbers, topping off at 48. Red-tailed Hawk numbers increased to 35, and Northern Harriers made a return with 24. Our best day so far for Red-shouldered Hawks with a grand total of 4, that number should make a major increase in the next few weeks. Non-raptor Observations: A few passerines continue to move, and Blue Jays show no signs of stopping. Many non-raptors where probably missed because of the heavy raptor flights. Predictions: The cold front from the north west should strike our region by midnight. It looks like tomorrow will be a rain out, the count will most likely be closed. Time will tell. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Greg Norwood ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
