Visitors:
A few visitors braved the cold and rain today.
Weather:
Another rotten weather day with strong NE winds and cold with a high to
just 10C...and this wasn't reached till mid-afternoon. The sky was socked
in with 100% cloud cover and it rained (quite hard at times) then finally
let up at noon.
Raptor Observations:
Apparently no one told the birds that they shouldn't fly in the rain. A
total of 1400 birds were tallied for the day with a good count of Osprey
(16), an excellent count of Harriers (124) and a lone Red-shouldered Hawk.
Non-raptor Observations:
Despite the rain, wind and all round gloomy conditions this morning, there
was lots of songbird activity on both sides of the road and path at the
south end of Hawk Cliff Rd during the first couple of hours. Hawk watchers
and songbird enthusiasts gathered near the gate to the cornfield which
provided a good view of this morning's A.K.s and harriers as well as a
multitude of songbirds foraging in the shrubbery. Among others, we noted
EASTERN TOWHEE plus FIELD, WHITE-CROWNED, WHITE-THROATED & SONG SPARROWS as
well as NORTHERN CARDINAL, AM. GOLDFINCH and 3 species of warblers
including YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACKPOLL & AM. REDSTART.
In the shrubbery directly across the road from the knoll, more sparrows
were observed in addition to BROWN CREEPER, RED-BREASTED NUTHACH, RUBY &
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, and a E. PHOEBE. A short distance up the road, a
WILLOW FLYCATCHER was spotted.
Of particular interest were a small flock of PURPLE MARTINS headed west
along the cliff and another small flock of TREE SWALLOWS following the same
flight path.
Predictions:
Monday is looking very good weather wise with moderate NE winds and lots of
sunshine, In fact, the whole of next week is looking good with
predominantly northly winds and sunshine predicted.
