The annual fall build-up of waterfowl in the Cataraqui River has begun. Last
weekend there were 6 Pied-billed and one Red-necked Grebe. Two hundred Am.
Wigeon, 8 N. Shoveler and 50 Greater Scaup were also tallied. By Tuesday the
number of scaup had tripled.

There were still 11 species of shorebird on Amherst Island last Friday; nothing
out of the ordinary but a lone Hudsonian Godwit over the Cataraqui River last
Sunday was our first local record for the year.

The land bird migration has shifted from warblers to kinglets, thrushes and
sparrows with a few Red-breasted Nuthatches, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and
Rusty Blackbirds thrown into the mix. There were lots of Swainson's and a few
Hermit Thrushes in the Owl Woods last Sunday and another Hermit was seen at
Bedford Mills on Tuesday. Sparrow highlights for the week include a Nelson's on
the Amherst KFN property last Friday, a Field, a Vesper and a Lark Sparrow at
PEPt and 2 Fox Sparrows in the Owl Woods last Sunday.

Lingering swallows included a Barn and 10 Rough-winged at the lagoons and a few
flocks of Tree Swallows on Wolfe Island last weekend.

There are signs of a winter finch movement; 12 Purple Finch and 3 Pine Siskins
at PEPt last Sunday and 4 more Purple Finches at Bedford Mills on Monday.

Cheers,

Peter Good
