Highlights of reports received October 7 through October 14 from the Niagara Frontier Region include AMERICAN AVOCETS and October Count reports.

October 9, 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS were found off the southwest blind at the Times Beach Nature Preserve on the Buffalo waterfront. Still present on the 13th; AVOCETS are showing a pattern of very rare fall occurrence in recent years. Also at Times Beach, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, CAROLINA WREN, WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CR. KINGLET, RUBY-CR. KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, ORANGE-CR. WARBLER, SAVANNAH SPARROW, WHITE-THR. SPARROW and WHITE-CR. SPARROW.

The BOS October Count was conducted on the 10th. Highlights from Niagara County included shorebirds at Hulbert Road in the Town of Wilson - AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, SEMIPALM. SANDPIPER, WHITE-R. SANDPIPER and PECTORAL SANDPIPER, plus first report of LAPLAND LONGSPUR. Before sunrise, 19 GREAT HORNED OWLS were heard calling in the county. Lake Ontario highlights - LESSER SCAUP, COMMON MERGANSER, RED-BR. MERGANSER, RED-THROATED LOON, 242 COMMON LOONS, RED-NECKED GREBE, SURF SCOTER and 2 distance JAEGERS. Other Niagara County highlights - PILEATED WOODPECKER at Wilson-Tuscaurora State Park, RED-EYED VIREO, a late VEERY, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, 20 HERMIT THRUSHES, 146 AMERICAN PIPITS, BL.-THR. BL. WARBLER, 83 YELLOW-R. WARBLERS, EASTERN TOWHEE, FOX SPARROW, 44 SONG SPARROWS, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 134 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, 299 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS and 5 PURPLE FINCHES.

And, a count section in the Town of Lancaster reported PILEATED WOODPECKER at five locations, 4 HERMIT THRUSHES in one tree and a unexpected migrant MARSH WREN along William Street.

Back on October 6, a apparent new maximum October count of 262 SURF SCOTERS included 15 on the Niagara River off Riverside and 247 SURF SCOTERS at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo.

Other recent reports - in Fort Erie, Ontario, a RED-HEADED WDPKR. at a Crystal Beach cottage and a single PINE SISKINS at a feeder in the Town of Holland.
