Weather: Last nights rain and cold front left us with a cold yet sunny day. Winds were as expected with the cold front, coming mostly from the north west, and gusting into the 20's. Another wave of storms could be seen on the horizon by the end of the count period. Raptor Observations: We might have had another experience with birds sensing the weather. A fairly slow day by comparison. Turkey Vultures showed up over Canada in small kettles, and most ended up right over our head. The last good sized group we had, followed the same flight path, but took 6 times as long fighting the wind. Those last Turkey Vultures looked very tired. In total we had 2,068 with half of those in the noon hour. 47 Red-tailed Hawks and 13 Red-shouldered Hawks isn't bad, but those were the hardy ones. Accipiters and Falcons were not as evident as usual. A total of 2,184 birds counted of 7 species. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jay migration has finally seemed to finalize, and American Crow numbers are picking up. Predictions: We are looking at another day of cold and sunny. We do have a warm front following behind our current weather, it should give us a beautiful weekend. This high pressure system will only last a few days, as Monday is said to have another cold front. These next three days should be a very strong push, the birds might want to move fast before they get stuck, or blown off course. Here is to crossing fingers and playing weatherman. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Greg Norwood ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
