This afternoon a total of 109 Swallows were seen in various sized groups along the western end of Lake Ontario at Lakeland Centre and Fifty Point. We have not had swallows in the area for weeks and if so they were only single sightings. Given the strong southwest winds we are presuming these may be Cave Swallows which have come up almost annually from the south on these strong southwest winds. The swallows were flying fairly high in the same general line from east to west along the lake but slightly inland. In our attempts to get details on the birds we were able to see some details on them (ie, they were dark square tailed swallows, one with colouration under the chin, one with a light rump). It was extremely frustrating. I only post here to put the word out that these swallows were seen in the right conditions for Cave Swallows and may be going through the area. Strong southwest winds the next two days could bring more birds to the area. If you are seeing swallows in the area, email privately or if confirmed, post so that people are aware.
The majority of the birds were seen from 50 Point Conservation Area located off Fifty Road in Grimsby. Cautiously posting....
