Ontbirds subscribers,
This morning at 8:50 I saw one of the Pacific Loons well out in the lake to the
east of my house in the bay off Thickson's Woods. It was loosely associating
with about 7 Common Loons. By 9:40 these birds had all drifted out and around
the point of land to the east and would have best been seen of Intrepid Park at
the south end of Boundary Road off the Whitby-Oshawa border or perhaps further
east off Lakefront Park West at the southern end of Stevenson Rd. S.
At 9:10 two Cave Swallows flew very close past my front yard (about 50 metres
off shore) from east to west into a fairly strong southwest wind. They
continued on around the end of Thickson's Point.
Large numbers of Red-breasted Mergansers are still passing through from west to
east. This morning I counted 268 American Goldfinches over my front yard, all
moving from east to west.
Over at Oshawa Harbour, a single Red-throated Loon was off one of the red
marker buoys off the end of the pier.
To reach the lake off Thickson's Woods, exit Hwy 401 at exit 412 and proceed
south on Thickson Rd. S. to the terminal cul-de-sac at the Waterfront Trail.
Park here and walk further south on Thickson Road, right to the lake. The
unsigned private road that runs east from Thickson Rd. is Crystal Beach Blvd.
The Pacific Loon and Cave Swallows were seen out front of house #330.
The pier at Oshawa Harbour can be reached by following Simcoe Street south to
its terminus at Lake Ontario.
