Total observation time: 6.5 hours
Official Counter: Colin Horstead
Observers: Dave Verkley, Derek Lyon, Don Taylor, Jennifer Lyon,
Mark Cunningham, Mary Carnahan, Michael Sandell,
Tom Stewart
Visitors:
Vistors today included Brett Woodman, Jim and Ken Burrell, Jessica Grealey
(Kitchener).
Weather:
Winds were strong SW as expected...which basically spread the migration
flight path quite a ways inland. The cloud deck was solid till about
mid-afternoon...then opened with a few blue sky patches. Temp started at
12C and got to 13C.
Raptor Observations:
Total birds today was 759...of which TV's were (664) resulting from and
early and very good upflight. Next in line were Harrirs (32)...8 of which
were males. Other highlights included Merlins (3) and another light morph
Roughleg.
The Osprey that's been handing around got itself another fish today but
was ambushed by one of the local Bald Eagles and the chase was on! The
Osprey finally managed to get more height than the eagle and the eagle gave
up the chase.
Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptor highlights today many CEDAR WAXWINGS and quite a few STARLINGS
but noticeably fewer AM. ROBINS than there were at the beginning of the
week. Highlights included more flights of TUNDRA SWANS, a YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER, numerous YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS & PURPLE FINCHES.
included a large dragonfly spotted by Derek and Jenn, likely a shadow
darner which flies well into the fall. One was spotted at the Cliff on
Wednesday, Oct. 27.
Predictions:
The winds are looking good for Sunday...so if there's no rain and the air
dries sufficiently we should see a decent flight.
