A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was at Blenheim S. L. this afternoon in Pond 1. It is
a record late for the Rondeau birding area. The last late date was 21 Oct
2006 at the same location found by myself. Presumably it is the same bird
that has been hanging out there all month. Strangely, we had the record
early one this past spring!
If anyone sees it beyond this date, please record in the sightings book at
the gate.
At Rondeau Park, birding was good. Notably, Jim Burk and I found a
WARBLING VIREO foraging on dogwood berries on South Point Trail. We assume
it is record late for the area.
Also, we caught sight of eight (8) CAVE SWALLOWS heading south along the
east beach of South Point Trail. Presumably, this is the first "in park"
record, at least for us.
At Erieau, a number of Cave Swallows were around the harbour area first
thing in the morning, but had departed by late morning. Perhaps more will
show later today. More than 40 were reported there or in the immediate
vicinity yesterday.
At McGeachy Pond, I came across a WHITE-EYED VIREO near the west end of the
dike. Not record late! (latest date is 24 November 2002 for the area
according to my records).
Directions to Erieau: The port of Erieau is located south of Blenheim.
West out of Blenheim on Talbot Trail (Rd. 3), turn left onto (Erieau Rd.)
Rd. 12 and follow to village. The pier area is found by continuing through
the village and turning right at the restaurant intersection. McGeachy
Pond is at the curve just before the village.
Lagoon Directions: Exit 401 at #90 (Communications Rd.) and head into
Blenheim. At the main stoplight turn right (west) onto Rd. 3. Travel about
1.5 km and turn right (north) onto Lagoon Rd. at the carwash, and continue
north about 1 km to gate. You must have an annual permit to enter.
Available at the Municipal Service Centre, 35 Talbot St. in Blenheim,
during business hours, fax (519) 676-0244.
