Neil Monaghan from Windsor also stopped by in the afternoon to check out the waterfowl in the marsh. A special thanks to Jim McCoy for sponsoring today as a "Day of HMBO research." Weather: Partly cloudy and cold (high of 11C) with NE winds 8-10 km/hr. Raptor Observations: The season's first major flight of Red-tails and Red-shouldereds with the majority (697 RT, 72 RS) moving through during the 11 to 12 DST hour. There was a nice showing of Golden Eagles (3 ad.,5 juv.,1 unk.) as well with the first few birds giving great looks gliding and soaring low overhead. Turkey Vultures continued on the move with 713 tallied, while small numbers of Harriers, Sharp-shins, and Cooper's Hawks moved through high with the Red-tails. Non-raptor Observations: Only a few with everyone looking up all day. Highlights were 8 Tundra Swans, 27 Am. Pipits, and 2 Purple Finch. Still at least 3 Great Egrets around the marsh, along with Ruddy Duck, 42 Ring-necked Ducks, and 3 Lesser Scaup. Am. Crows were moving heavily in the morning with 1,400 tallied. Predictions: Partly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers in the afternoon. Winds starting off NW 5-8 km/hr switching to SW 10-12. High of 10C. Not ideal winds, but there should be a decent clean-up flight of Red-tails. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
