A male Black-backed Woodpecker was at the Kerwin Rd trail this morning. Actually it was off the road rather than off the trail itself: betwen the trailhead and #830 Kerwin. This is the most vocal individual of this species I have ever encountered: it was calling persistently. Earlier, an Evening Grosbeak flew over the trailhead.
Paul Matthews, Ottawa Directions: From 417 west, take March Rd north some 7 kms, then turn right on Dunrobin Rd and go for a km or two. Next trun right on Kerwin just past a gas station. Go for a km or two till you see a large yellow diamond-shaped sign indicating a school bus stop on your right. The trailhead is here. There is space to pull off and park on the side of the road. Note that, while the trail itself is apparently public access, the surrounding land is private property, as indicated by the numerous "No trespassing" signs. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
