A special thanks goes out to Chuck Sharbaugh from Holly, Michigan for sponsoring today as a "Day of HBMO Research." Weather: Mostly clear and mild (high of 15C) with light W winds turning to SW late in the morning. Raptor Observations: Slow, but not unexpected given the conditions. Several Red-tails and a few small kettles of Turkey Vultures drifted through, along with a few each Harriers, Red-shouldered, Cooper's, and Sharp-shinned Hawks. Highlights were a light Rough-legged Hawk in the 10:00 hour, as well as a sub(near)adult Golden Eagle that came in at 11:01 low over the treeline to the NE before gaining height and gliding off to the west. Non-raptor Observations: A fair number of diurnal migrant passerines were moving in the calm conditions, including 132 Am. Pipits, 140 Horned Larks, 145 Rusty Blackbirds, and 170 C. Grackles. Other birds included Fox Sparrow and Winter Wren around the tower, 7 Pine Siskins, lingering Great Egret, 7 fly-over Tundra Swans, and a raft of 600 Scaup sp. out on the lake. Predictions: Sunny and mild with light NE winds in the morning turning SE 10 km/hr. High of 15C. The easterly winds should bring more Red-tails down the shore, but the mild temps. might keep things slow. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
