Weather: Mostly cloudy in the morning clearing to partly cloudy by the afternoon with a high of 9C. Winds were strong out of the WSW 20-22 km/hr with gusts to 30. Raptor Observations: A few Red-tails fighting into the strong winds along with 2 (light) Rough-legged Hawks, and a lone Northern Harrier and late Turkey Vulture. In addition to the local ad. and juv. Bald Eagle, a near-adult Bald Eagle along with a 3rd-yr. appeared to be on the move (although taking their time). The juv. Golden Eagle showed up out of nowhere over the NW treeline at 1:37 and kited around in the winds for a while before drifting SW. Non-raptor Observations: Horned Larks and Am. Goldfinches were on the move throughout the day with 204 and 127 tallied, respectively. Other highlights were a single Sandhill Crane moving west in the morning, a few flocks of Tundra Swans (67 indiv. total), along with a late Tree Swallow working its way west during the 10:00 hour. Predictions: Mostly cloudy and cold with light NE winds and a high of 6C. Looks like a decent set-up for a late season flight of Red-tails if the forecast holds. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jim Pawlicki ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
