Greetings Ontbirders
This afternoon I saw an immature Snowy Owl between Bensfort and South
Monaghan, and since there have been so few reported in southern
Ontario this fall/winter, I thought it was post-worthy. The bird was
atop a telephone pole along Scriven Rd., between the 2nd and 3rd Line
in South Monaghan Twsp. This is southern-western Peterborough County,
north of the west end of Rice Lake.
The best way to find it would be to get on Cty Rd. 28 and at the town
of Bailieboro, take Cty. Rd 2 east, then turn left (north) at the
first crossroad which is Scriven Rd. Go north on Scriven and the
first road you cross is the 2nd Line. The Snowy was a little over a
km. north of this intersection, or about 600m south of the 3rd Line,
which is the next road you will come to. This is beautiful rolling
farm country with lots of good habitat so the bird may well be moving
around a bit, or perhaps just passing through. Most of the roads
around here are somewhat narrow with minimal shoulders so please be
careful and avoid blocking traffic when pulling over.
