Niagara Frontier Region include KING EIDER, HARLEQUIN DUCK, BOHEMIAN
WAXWING and EASTERN TOWHEE.
January 10, an adult male KING EIDER, on Lake Ontario off the
Welland Canal at Port Weller, Ontario. This rare species and more rare
plumage may have been at this location since mid-December. The eider
was in the cove to the east side of the canal piers, accessed by
hiking the Seaway Haulage Trail.
January 9, on the lower Niagara River, a reported HARLEQUIN DUCK at
Devil's Hole State Park. More details on this find would be
appreciated.
From the Lake Ontario Plains, January 8, 11 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS among
140 CEDAR WAXWINGS, in an orchard on the south side of Lake Road near
the Town of Newfane water treatment plant. Flocks of up to 300 SNOW
BUNTINGS with HORNED LARKS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS have been reported
throughout the lake plains, also ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and NORTHERN SHRIKE.
Other ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS - two dark and one light morph in the
Chautauqua County Town of Clymer, and NORTHERN SHRIKE at the Dunkirk
Airport.
COMMON REDPOLLS continue at feeders and open areas across the entire
region - from Lake Ontario to the Southern Tier. Often with AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES and a few PINE SISKINS. Beyond the region, in the Central
New York highlands, EVENING GROSBEAKS are apparently widespread.
In West Seneca, a pair of EASTERN TOWHEES at a feeder since December.
January 6 at Dunkirk Harbor, highlights included EARED GREBE at the
west end, LITTLE GULL and 3 TRUMPETER SWANS. Also in the harbor -
