Winter listing continues here in the Hamilton Study Area. Some new winter birds have turned up this past week. Included in these good winter birds, an immature Golden Eagle was seen on Governors Rd just west of the Hamilton-Brant boundary last Sunday. This is only the fourth mid-winter record. Turkey Vultures have been seen over Lynden Road just north of Jerseyville Rd twice this past week. In Brantford, American Wigeon were seen at the Brantford Waterworks Park. Eastern Towhees were seen in North-west Brantford and a Field Sparrow was seen at the Brantford Dump. Horned Larks, Lapland Longspurs and Snow Buntings in significant numbers have been reported at several spots in the area. All three species were seen on Fallsview Road near Dyments Farm in Flamborough last weekend. On Lynden Rd about a km south of Conc 4 West, a field on the west side of the road with fresh manure had Horned Larks and Snow Buntings. Closer to the city Horned Larks and Snow Buntings were seen near the Riocan Centre near Burloak and Wyecroft in Oakville during the week. Down in the south of the circle, Tufted Titmice were seen at Ruthven Park in Cayuga at the feeders there. More Tufted Titmice have been reported from feeders Haller Heights Park in Caledonia. Also here are a number of White-crowned Sparrows and Purple Finch. In the odds and sods this week, a Red-necked Grebe was reported off Fifty Point. A single Short-eared Owl was seen on 10th Road East behind the quarry. Belted Kingfishers were seen in northwest Brantford and at the Brantford Waterworks Park. A Hermit Thrush was seen in a backyard in Pleasant Valley in Dundas. On Concession 4W a bit east of Lynden Rd, a weedy field on the south side of the road between house nos. 1984 and 1996 held a flock of American Tree Sparrows with some Common Redpolls mixed in. At the Brantford dump a Rough-legged Hawk and Bald Eagle were seen flying over. Bald Eagles were reported from Cootes Paradise, Sioux Lookout and sitting on the ice out in the Hamilton Harbour. A Glaucous Gull was seen at Burloak Park in Burlington. Of interest this week was a Peregrine Falcon photographed flying over the Burlington Lift Bridge with falconry gear on.
