On Friday, March 11th, 2011, this is the HNC Birding Report: ROSS'S GOOSE BOHEMIAN WAXWING
Tundra Swan Wood Duck American Wigeon Redhead Hooded Merganser Ring-necked Pheasant Red-throated Loon Pied-billed Grebe Horned Grebe Turkey Vulture Bald Eagle Killdeer American Woodcock Glaucous Gull Northern Flicker Northern Shrike Common Raven Horned Lark Eastern Bluebird Hermit Thrush Snow Bunting Red-winged Blackbird Common Grackle Brown-headed Cowbird Common Redpoll Pine Siskin What a difference a week makes in the migrants we have on the list this week. Some were on last week but these are now showing in greater numbers. The list is still somewhat short but no complaints from the compiler The most noteworthy birds of the week were a ROSS'S GOOSE found across from the Smithville Sewage lagoons for a short time last Sunday. On March 6th, 75 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen at Fletcher Creek Conservation Area in North Flamborough. These have been reported sporadically here throughout the last couple of months. People out and about last weekend were able to see the typical early migrants coming into our area. At the Dundas Hydro Ponds, Tundra Swans were flying over. Wood Duck, American Wigeon, Redhead and Hooded Merganser were present in small numbers. A Pied Grebe was also seen last Sunday. A Horned Grebe was spotted yesterday and again today in the Desjardins Canal. One of the most noteworthy sightings of the week were of Common Ravens. Sightings of this species are on a rise each year. This past week, three were seen over the Cootes Paradise and Dundas Hydro Ponds. Two were flying over Fairchild Creek on 5th Concession West in Flamborough on Sunday. A single Raven was seen at Beamer earlier in the week. Mid-week one was seen on Concession 8 West west of Westover Road in Flamborough. Action has been slow at the Niagara Peninsula Hawk Watch at Beamer Memorial Conservation Area due to poor weather conditions. When this weather breaks, it should make for a good movement of birds. Four Bald Eagles went over the tower mid week the first of many to come. Turkey Vultures are being seen sporadically at the watch, over Dundas and up in the Flamborough area. People with feeders in the area are noting Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles and Brown-headed Cowbirds in increasing numbers. There are still people reporting Common Redpoll and Pine Siskins. In the odds and sods, two Ring-necked Pheasants were seen up in Saltfleet, a male and female at the south east corner of Hyland and Tapleytown Road. A Killdeer was seen in the field opposite the Walmart on Fairview in Burlington yesterday. American Woodcock could be heard peenting and seen displaying, location unknown at present but probably traditional spots should be checked. A first winter Glaucous Gull was seen on the receding ice at LaSalle Marina. Northern Shrikes were seen on Brock Road south of Concession 4 West and on Ainsley east of Lynden Road. A Northern Flicker was reported from Crieff. Eastern Bluebirds are still in the Cootes Paradise area. A wintering Hermit Thrush made another appearance in Hidden Valley. Snow Buntings and Horned Larks can still be found near Dyments Farm on Sydenham Road. That's the news this week, get out on the weekend when the weather clears and see what else has arrived.
