A reminder to all birders that Eastern Loggerhead Shrikes are already
starting to make their way back to Ontario - some have already arrived to
breeding areas. I've heard from our Biologist in Carden that a pair can
already be observed near a favourite haunt - Bluebird Box 10 on Wylie Rd.
Please take advantage of the bird blind in this location, and the pull-off
sections along the road. Shrikes are steadily returning to the other core
areas as well, with birds seen in Napanee recently.

Many of the returning birds will likely be banded. Most shrikes banded in
the last couple of years will have received 4-colour combos. Birds wearing
geolocators are banded with only 2 bands, either RED/SILVER on the LEFT
(released in 2009) or SILVER on LEFT and RED on RIGHT (released in 2010).
These birds must be re-captured in order to remove the tag and collect the
logged data - this information will tell us where this bird has been all
winter and what route(s) it took on migration. So we are especially keen to
find these birds this season!

PLEASE report any Loggerhead Shrike sightings to Wildlife Preservation
Canada at jessica at wildlifepreservation.ca
<http://ontbirds.ca/mailman/listinfo/birdalert_ontbirds.ca> , or on our
toll-free number 1-800-956-6608. Please take a moment to look for bands on
any shrike seen and report these with your sighting

Thank you in advance.

Happy Birding!
