If anyone has driven on Pump House Rd. near the junction of County Rd. 11 and
Canal rd., you can't help but see the vast changes that are being made to the
canal itself which is being "renmodeled". I have been a little anxious to see
what affect this might have on the local wildlife, so it was a pleasant
surprise to discover 2 Great Egrets right at the side of the road near the
earthen berm where a large digging machine is parked. As well, there was a very
obliging Broad-winged Hawk perched on an overhead wire on Keele Street north of
Highway 9 near the Cardinal Golf Course. Hopefully these birds will hang around
a bit. From Hwy. 400 go east on Hwy. 9 to the lights at keele St. Turn left and
remain on Keele St. until you reach Dufferin St. turn left and continue on to
Pump House Rd. Turn left at the bridge and scan the canal on your right. Once
you reach Canal Rd., turn back on to C.R. 11. birds were seen around 5:00 pm.,
May 3.
