This is my first posting. While sitting in my living and making phone calls to students in South Korea, I kept seeing a large bird flying across the playing field of Eastern Commerce. I was very excited, because I suspected it was a female Scarlet Tanager. I sent my husband, Bernie, to look for the bird, but he didn¹t follow through too well (Yeah, yeah, big yellow bird....)
When I finished my calls, I went out to have a look. I saw yellow rumps, yellow, palm, 2 unknown warblers, 1 unknown flycatcher, male and female rose-breasted grosbeaks, and a male and female Scarlet Tanager! The playing field is connected to Phin Park, the walking area between the high school and Ontario Housing. Going through there are the TTC grounds, which has a dog park. (I saw w.w. Crossbills there, 2 winters ago). To get to the playing field, go the end of Euston Avenue and cross Chatham Avenue. Euston is on the south side of Danforth Avenue, across from Donlands Avenue. That is also where Donlands Subway Station is located. Once you go through the playing field the park is at the end, and the walkway is on the left, dividing the playing field and the park. I saw the Tanagers flying about playing field, mostly at the trees by the laneway bordering the playing field. The grosbeaks are in the trees between the Ontario housing yards, and Phin park.
