Hello ontbirders,

Looks like Toronto island was one of many great spots in Ontario today to be
birding. Flying solo today there was s mini-fallout on Ward's island that
greeted me at 7am. A symphony of warbler song from everywhere you could go
today. A CERULEAN Warbler sang persistently in the woodlot on the very east
side of Ward's (towards the east end concrete path). A BLUE-WINGED or possible
Brewster's/Lawrence's was singing in the vicinity as well. I never got on the
bird but it was singing the typical "A" Blue-Winged song.

I briefly located a HOODED Warbler low in the small shrubs to the left side of
18 Omaha Avenue on Algonquin Island. It gave two quick songs and disappeared
behind the house.

A PRAIRIE warbler was singing for about five minutes in some small trees about
100m west of the firehouse.

Continuing west from the firehouse, past Snug Harbour and into "the trap".
There were good birds here as well. A MOURNING warbler was silent but visibly
skulking in low vegetation and accompanied by a WILSON'S warbler. Another
Wilson's became vocal a few metres away until I had the two in the same bush!

On certain days the island can be magic and this morning was a perfect example.
Below, some of the other warblers and birds.

Also 3 Scarlet Tanagers (all male), 1 Grey-Cheeked Thruish, 9 Swainson's. 14
Lincoln's Sparrows (some singing). You want to see orange? Baltimore Orioles
were everywhere, i estimate at least 80 today. 2 Orchard Orioles, Snake island
and Ward's. 2 Canvasback in the channel at Hanlan's. One Great-Crested
Flycatcher, one ALDER (thanks for singing), one E. Wood Pewee and 16 least
Flycatchers che-beking around the islands. 30+ Gray Catbirds. 40+ Warbling
Vireos, only 2 Red-Eyed and 4 Blue-Headed. A notable amount of White-Crowned
Sparrows but I didn't even try to count them as I was pressed for time. One
Eastern Meadowlark and five E Kingbirds at the airport to finish things off.

Good luck, the rain is coming tomorrow. I wanted to also take one second and
publicly thank the Ottawa birding community for their friendship and welcoming
demeanor. I am happy to be back in Toronto birding with Norm and Ian but I made
a lot of friends in the last 3 and a half years that I was in Ottawa. The fall
count, Bruce Di Labio and Michael Runtz' Christmas counts. Very special people
up in Ottawa :)

Good birding,

Jay Peterson

the islands.
