Hi, I was birding yesterday afternoon & was stunned to find an adult American Avocet in breeding plumage north east of Beeton, Ontario. I called fellow birder John Schmelefske who arrived and aggreed with my identification. The bird put on quite a display of resting, preening & feeding. On at least two occasions it caught huge worms. Two greater yellowlegs were nearby & tried to share the meal. I have good photos of the bird.
There was a storm the night before & there has been a lot of rain & wind. The bird was still there at 10AM this morning. Sorry for the delayed posting, I sent the information to ontbirds last night instead of birdalert. The bird was on the 15th sideroad of New Tecumseth on a big body of water on a sod farm. It was on the east side of the road just south of the 13 line New Tecumseth. If coming from HWY 400 you would travel east on HWY 89 to the 15th sideroad & turn south. Go past 14th line & 13th line. The sod farm is on the south east corner of 15th sideroad & 13th line. The bird is best seen from the 15th sideroad, lots of shoulder but it is a busy farming gravel road. Good birding, Susan Menzies _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
