Once the fog lifted from the Point Traverse Woods at Prince Edward Point,
birding was spectacular for the dozen who took part in the regular 8:00 a.m.
guided bird hike along the groomed trails. At least 18 species of warblers
were present with numerous TENNESSEE WARBLERS singing enthusiastically and
many AMERICAN REDSTARTS. The YELLOW-THROATED VIREO was still present in its
usual spot and an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER remained on a dead branch for
several seconds for everyone to see. In one spot at the west end of the
trail system, it was a bevy of colour as a SCARLET TANAGER, NORTHERN
PARULAS, INDIGO BUNTING, AMERICAN REDSTARTS and BALTIMORE ORIOLES flitted
among the branches of ironwoods and hickories.
The Birding Festival continues through the Victoria Day weekend. Details at
www.peptbo.ca . Bird-friendly shade-grown coffee available in the
Hospitality Tent. Guided bird walks every morning at 8:00 a.m. beginning
just west of the Point Traverse corner.
