About 150 birders saw the male Willow Ptarmigan at Ontario Power Generation's Darlington Nuclear Station on Sunday morning 12 June 2011. It strutted for several minutes in full view for everyone to enjoy. The Ontario Field Ornithologists are indebted to these special people for making this event possible:
Ontario Power Generation (OPG): Susan Bragg, John Peters and Chris Wood of the Environmental Assessment Department at Darlington Nuclear organized today's viewing with utmost precision. Special thanks are extended to Bev Forget in Public Affairs, OPG Security, OPG Operations, and OPG Management Team. Beacon Environmental: Brian Henshaw, Adele Labbe and Ron Huizer strategically planned how 150 birders would see the bird well. Please Note: There is no public access to the area where the ptarmigan is located. No further tours are anticipated at this time. Should OPG provide another opportunity we will post on Ontbirds. See photos of the Willow Ptarmigan and birders viewing it. We've included information in the captions, a discussion of its plumage, possible origin of this bird and some historical notes of interest. http://www.jeaniron.ca/2011/willowptarmigan.htm Jean Iron and Ron Pittaway _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
