The bird of the week was a MARBLED GODWIT that arrived in a wet area of a field along Greenbank Rd. north of Fallowfield Rd. on the 9th along with several other shorebirds and a single BRANT. The birds were still present on the morning of the 10th, but by the 11th only a group of MALLARDS remained. A total of 11 species of WATERFOWL, many with young, were at the Embrun, St. Albert and Casselman sewage lagoons on the 12th and 13th. An AMERICAN BITTERN was spotted at the Embrun site, and 3 GREAT EGRETS have been in the Sawmill Creek Constructed Wetland between the Airport Parkway and the South Keys shopping centre for several days. GREEN HERONS were noted in a few locations as well, as were VIRGINIA RAIL, COMMON MOORHEN and AMERICAN COOT. In addition to the godwit, shorebirds at Greenbank Rd. location included BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SEMIPALMATED and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and DUNLIN, all in small numbers. The aforementioned lagoons hosted a few shorebirds on the 12th and 13th, with SPOTTED SANDPIPER the most common species. Also present were SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SEMIPALMATED, LEAST, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and DUNLIN. A RED KNOT was reported from Casselman on the 13th. Many reports of UPLAND SANDPIPERS came in some from previously mentioned locations in the Kanata, Dunrobin and Constance Bay areas, but a few were also from other rural areas. Gatineau Park "fixtures" were again a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO singing near the parking lot east of the Champlain lookout, and an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER at Lac Fortune. Among the many SWALLOWS feeding at the Embrun lagoons were TREE, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED and BANK. SEDGE WRENS continue to be vocal in the sedge meadow near the railroad tracks on Torbolton Ridge Rd. The Carp hills along the Thomas Dolan Parkway between Stonecrest Rd. and Carp Rd. were productive for GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER and EASTERN TOWHEE on the 9th and 10th, and a good variety of field species continue to be found in their typical habitats.
