Hey Birders, Charlotte Moore and I checked out Pelee Island for the afternoon today. There wasn't spectacular diversity but some pretty cool birds and butterflies around. The highlight was as were leaving, an adult Laughing Gull in basic plumage at the ferry dock. We had the bird as were literally getting on the ferry around 3:30pm. I was able to get some pretty decent photos, which are on my blog (http://kenburrell.blogspot.com/).
There was quite a number of gulls at Fish Point and elsewhere. 1 adult Little Gull was seen from the ferry on the way over and 2 first-year Lesser Black-backed Gulls were seen (one at both Fish Point and the ferry dock). Interesting butterflies seen included, 2 American Snouts, ~30 Giant Swallowtails and a few Tawny Emperors. Good Birding! Ken Burrell Directions: Pelee Island is accessible from the Leamington ferry terminal. The ferry operates daily, several times a day. Best chances for looking for the LAGU is to check the ferry dock and fish point as well as any other flocks of gulls. I've attached a link to the ferry schedule operating out of Leamington. http://www.chicheemaun.com/jii/english/schedule_fares.html#summer1 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
