On Labor Day Bill Smith and I birded the Toronto Islands from Wards to the
Centre Island Ferry Docks including Algonquin and Snake Islands. The weather
was overcast with winds from the north at 15/20 Kms. The first 2 hours
produced very little and then after a coffee break at the Island Cafe things
started to pick up when we crossed over to Algonquin Island. We managed 58
species for the day and some of the birds we saw were Hairy Woodpecker -
Great Crested Flycatcher - Philadelphia Vireo - Wood Thrush - Swainson"s
Thrush and 18 specie of Warbler including Cape May - Northern Parula - Bay
Breasted - Pine - Blackburnian and Canada. We didn't tally species but some
of the flocks were quite large and at one point we had a flock of 75/100
migrants stream by us at treetop level so quickly that we were only able to
identify one or two of the birds.
