It's been a very busy week here in the Hamilton Study Area. There is lots
to report from all different facets of birding. We will start out at the
beach where northeast winds all week have been producing some of Hamilton's
specialty birds. This week SABINE'S GULL, PARASITIC AND LONG-TAILED JAEGER
have been seen from the Lakeland Centre and Hutch's Restaurant. We are long
overdue for more SABINE's GULL so the next couple of days of northeast winds
may prove productive. Other birds seen at the beach here include
Green-winged Teal, White-winged Scoter, Peregrine Falcon, Sanderling,
Caspian and Common Tern, Bonaparte's Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gull. The
week before last a Little Gull was seen out on the lake. Of interest
yesterday were 150 Sanderling near the lift bridge.

Shorebirds are still making news in the area, Seen at the Red Hill
Stormwater Pond, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary Sandpiper, Stilt
Sandpiper, Wilson's Phalarope and Short-billed Dowitcher were seen this
week. At the Windermere Basin, Semipalmated Plover, Buff-breasted Sandpiper
(last seen Tuesday), Sanderling, Semipalmated, Least, Bairds and Pectoral
Sandpiper were seen early in the week. This spot should be checked again
after all these northeast winds.

Viewing from the marsh boardwalk on the trails at the Northshore trails at
the Royal Botanical Gardens, Black-bellied and Semipalmated Plover, Greater
and Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted, Solitary, Least, Semipalmated and Baird's
Sandpipers were seen. Also present were Green-winged Teal, Great Egrets
(6), Black-crowned Night Herons (18), Green Heron, Bald Eagle and Caspian
Terns.

Another good shorebird spot is at the back of Mountsberg Conservation Area
seen from Leslie Street. Shorebirds here this week include White-rumped,
Semipalmated and Pectoral Sandpiper.

There has been lots of action in passerine migration this week. Down at
Fifty Point, Eastern Kingbird (12 in one flock), Yellow-bellied, Least and
Great Crested Flycatcher, Warbling and Red-eyed Vireo, Barn Swallow,
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Veery, Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Blackburnian,
Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart,
Northern Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a late
Orchard and Baltimore Oriole were seen last Monday.

West of here at Edgelake park in Stoney Creek, Eastern Wood Pewee, Least
Flycatcher, Warbling and Red-eyed Vireo, Veery, Gray-cheeked and Swainson's
Thrush, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Northern Parula, Magnolia, Black-throated
Blue, Blackburnian, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Black-and White and Canada
Warbler, American Redstart, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush and Baltimore
Oriole were the highlights last Sunday.

A nice surprise for a birder hiking along the Spencer Creek Trail was a
Sedge Wren. Other birds seen here this week were American Woodcock,
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Magnolia, Black-throated Green, Chestnut sided
and Mourning Warbler.

At Woodland Cemetery Osprey, Least Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo, Magnolia,
Black-throated Green and Black-and-white Warbler were noted Saturday.

Lastly, at Shoreacres in Burlington Great Crested Flycatcher, Red-eyed
Vireo, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Magnolia Warbler and Rose-breasted
Grosbeak were seen.

In the odds and sods, a Great Egret was present at the Valley Inn today.
Sandhill Cranes were reported from Glen Morris and from along Hwy 24 in a
field on the west side of the road, about 1km south of McLean School Road.
An early Blue-headed Vireo was reported from behind Tansley Woods Community
Centre in Burlington.

That's the news this week. It should be a great weekend to be out looking
so please report your sightings here.

Cheers,
Cheryl Edgecombe
