Bill Smith and I are birding the Point Pelee area this week-end and on Saturday we visited the site on Comber Side Road posted by Ellen Smout yesterday. We can confirm that the birding is indeed outstanding with flocks of plovers and other shorebirds arriving and leaving nonstop. During 3 plus hours we saw: American Golden Plover - 800/1000 Black bellied Plover - 200/250 Killdeer - 15/20 Greater Yellow Legs - 1 Lesser Yellow Legs - 4 Solitary Sandpiper - 2 Hudsonian Godwit - 9 Pectoral Sandpiper - 2 Dunlin - 12 Common Snipe - 2 Long Billed Dowitcher - 1 (this I.D. is based strictly on the time of the year as the birds are at some distance so could well be a S.B.D.)
We birded both from the road and also the rear of the Agris Co-Op Ltd. property which affords a somewhat closer view. Several of the Agris employees joined us during our stay and were quite interested to look through our scopes. This is private property and should be treated accordingly. If you are in the area it is definitely worth the stop. The Black bellied and American Golden Plovers were arriving and leaving in flocks really too large to count with any accuracy. The Agris Co-Op Ltd.is at 2800 Comber Side Road 2 1/2 miles north of the Comber 401 exit.
