Monday Bill Smith and I went to Long Point to look for sparrows which we
didn't find other than a Lincoln's, some White throats and a small flock of
Chippers at Turkey Point. Birds were scarce other than Yellow-rumped
Warblers and Kinglets which were everywhere we stopped in big numbers.Total
of 39 species for the day mostly garden variety other than we did see 5
Woodpecker species including Downy and Red bellied, Northern Flicker,
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a juvenile Red-headed a short distance along
Holstein Drive from the corner at Lakeshore Rd. For Red-headed that makes
14 for the year so far. We had already seen 3 at the end of the Van Wagner's
Beach bikepath opposite Goeman's last week, 4 at Waverly Beach Fort Erie in
September, 3 at the Backus Page Museum near St. Thomas in August and 3 in
the Rainy River area in June. Previously I have never seen more than one or
two a year and some years none at all. Weather was mostly sunny with wind
gusts up to 80 Km. at times.
