Hello Ontbirders,
There was an interesting assemblage of birds at the Long Point Bird Observatorys Old Cut Field Station at the base of Long Point today. The morning census began at around 8:45 with an observation of a White-eyed Vireo in the Old Cut parking lot before it moved west with a group of kinglets. About 5 minutes later, a young male Summer Tanager was found at 9 Old Cut Blvd., just south of the field station. It was regularly calling with a very loud and distinctive "pit-i-tuck" that can be heard from some distance. It was found on and off throughout the morning mostly in the upper ¾ canopy of the Scots Pines of Old Cut Blvd. and Lighthouse Crst. This tanager is record late for the Long Point area by about two months. Contrasting the Summer Tanager, small movements of winter finches (Purple Finches and Pine Siskins) and late fall migrants/overwintering birds have begun to appear at Long Point. It was particularly odd to watch the tanager and hear a White-winged Crossbills, Snow Buntings and Horned Larks fly overhead while I was observing the tanager. Earlier in the week (October 25) a young male Yellow-throated Warbler was banded at the Tip of Long Point.
